Stand it against the wall you're throwing at, down on the ground, tipped back a little so it looks up at you, about 6 to 12 feet from where you throw. A tripod at shoulder height is even better.
Use the selfie camera, so the screen faces you, and keep it square-on rather than off at an angle.
Your head, shoulders and both hands. That's all it needs.
Your feet don't have to be in the picture, and the wall doesn't either, so don't back up further than it takes to get your arms in comfortably. The ball should leave the picture through the top edge toward the target. If it's leaving through the bottom, the count won't be reliable.
No. A brick wall, a hard rebounder, a mesh rebounder or a bungee rebounder all work. You can tell the app which one you use under Profile → Athlete → Wall type.
Not yet. This version is built and tested for an outdoor wall in ordinary daylight. Indoors and low light are on the list, but we'd rather tell you straight than have the counter quietly miss your reps.
A bright day with the phone parked in the shade. Three separate things are at work here and they are easy to run together.
- Keep the sun behind the phone, not behind you. The phone sits at the wall looking back at you, so sun behind you shines straight into the lens and washes the ball out. Sun behind the phone lights you and the ball up instead.
- Give the ball something dark behind it. A white ball can vanish against a white fence or pale siding even with no glare at all. Angle the camera so trees or a darker surface sit behind the ball's path.
- Keep the phone itself out of direct sun. This one is about the hardware, not the picture. A phone baking in the sun heats up and starts dropping frames, and dropped frames cost you reps.
So the ball wants daylight to hit it and a dark backdrop behind it, and the phone wants shade. A cool, bright day gives you both at once.
Counting & accuracy
Nine times out of ten it's where the phone is sitting. Run through these:
- Selfie camera, screen facing you.
- Phone against the wall, on the ground, tipped back, 6 to 12 feet away.
- Head, shoulders and both hands in frame.
- Square-on, not off at an angle.
- Ball leaving through the top of the picture, not the bottom.
There's a fuller walkthrough in the app under Profile → User Guide.
That's the app being careful, not broken. Glare, a busy background, or standing off to one side can make it miss a rep here and there.
It only counts what it's sure about, so it will never hand you a rep you didn't throw. It may just come in a little short. Trust what you know you did out there.
A hot phone has to work harder, and the count for that set can end up a little off. What actually helps:
- Find some shade. This is the big one.
- Prop it up off hot pavement. Grass is fine either way.
- Slip the case off between sets if it feels warm.
- Don't charge while you're playing.
- Give it several minutes between sessions. A quick pause between sets won't cool it down.
You'll hear a click every time a rep counts. Once in a while two clicks come quick together. That's just the app catching up on a couple of reps at once. It's normal, and both reps count.
Yes. Left and right are counted and stored separately, so your Progress tab can show how much work each hand is actually getting. Set which hand is your dominant one under Profile → Athlete → Dominant hand. The app never guesses.
Your account
Open the Profile tab. Name, position, dominant hand, play level, class year and wall type all sit under Athlete at the top.
Tap Forgot password on the sign-in screen and we'll email you a reset link. If you're already signed in, change it under Profile → Account → Password.
Open the Profile tab, scroll to the bottom, and tap Delete account.
That starts a 30-day grace period. Sign back in during that window and you can cancel it. After 30 days the account and its training history are permanently deleted.
Athletes aged 13 and up. Parents are welcome to set an account up for their athlete and manage it with them.
Privacy & data
Nothing. The camera analyses your movement in real time, on your phone, to spot throws and catches. No video or images are recorded, stored, or sent to us or to anyone else.
The numbers, and your profile. Rep counts, session dates, streaks and XP are saved to your account so your progress survives a lost phone or a new one. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
Yes, for athletes 13 and over. Set the account up together and it works exactly the same.
For players under 13 we need a proper parent assisted signup with verified parental consent, and that is not built yet. We would rather tell you plainly than work around it. It is coming.
